The use of Big Data holds promise for pharmaceutical companies to improve their businesses both internally and externally. Internally, crunching of large data sets can help companies understand more precisely where they are being inefficient, and correct those issues. Externally, the promise is even greater: Utilization of Big Data can help pharmaceutical manufacturers to understand who their customers are – how to find them, how to reach them, and how to sell to them. This could be a major shift for an industry that has historically relied on a middle man: doctors. But the industry must also be careful to collect and use sensitive data in a compliant manner.
