John has worked in the higher education sector for more than 40 years, developing incentive-based budgeting; assessing organizational strategy, structure and effectiveness; and optimizing operational efficiencies. He has extensive experience implementing enterprise software systems and developing long-term financial plans for the integration of operating budgets and balance sheets.
For more than four decades, John has assisted university financial offices with optimizing their strategic and financial outcomes. He has helped numerous clients to develop incentive-based budgeting, create annual budgets in the context of their long-term financial consequences and integrate funding of strategic priorities with annual operations.
Throughout his career, John has optimized administrative and operational efficiency for his clients through organizational redesign and software-enabled process workflows, enhancing student access and graduation rates through net pricing strategies and the use of degree-progress diagnostics and enabling organizational structure and behavior changes that are necessary for sustained transformation.
John previously served Huron as a managing director for nearly 10 years. Prior to rejoining Huron, he was the director of strategic initiatives at Deloitte. He also served as executive vice president of Massachusetts Institute of Technology, vice president for business and finance at California Institute of Technology, administrative vice chancellor and chief financial officer at UCLA, and vice president for budget and planning at University of Southern California.
John holds a Master of Arts in mathematics and a Bachelor of Arts in physics, magna cum laude, from West Virginia University. He was a NIMH Fellow in Organizational Research at Stanford University.
John serves as chairman of the board for the Forum for the Future of Higher Education. He is a former trustee of the College Board (SAT, PSAT, AP) and chair of its trustee finance committee and on the board of directors of NACUBO.
