Lawrence Hanrahan

Dr. Larry Hanrahan combines global consulting expertise, technology and digital knowledge, and a clinical and research perspective. For over three decades, he has assisted healthcare clients with identifying and implementing the comprehensive activities necessary to successfully transform their organizations across the care continuum — from strategy through implementation to growth and sustainability.

About Dr. Hanrahan

Dr. Larry Hanrahan is a physician whose global consulting experience has reached more than 80 organizations, including 40 academic medical centers in the U.S. and abroad. His experience includes strategic planning and facility master planning, clinical operating model development, new medical school accreditation and road map development, business and clinical transformation, clinical integration and transformation, and strategic facilitation and change management. Larry’s expertise also includes physician services and engagement, supply chain and shared services, project management office development, and implementations that help enable greenfield (net new) organizations and facilities.

Larry has led assessments and implementations related to health information exchanges (HIEs), electronic medical records (EMRs), administrative and financial systems or enterprise resource planning (ERP), IT and cloud strategies (including end-user devices), medical equipment, and telehealth. His expertise includes the development of virtual health use cases, business cases and road maps to help leaders make and implement strategic decisions.

Throughout his career, Larry has:

  • Developed an IT strategy, road map and budget for a state university system of eight academic institutions, including seven health systems that facilitated the input of over 15 chief information officers and over 500 key clinical, research, educational, academic and administrative stakeholders, including students and patients.
  • Led the post-acquisition alignment of governance, organizational structure and technology infrastructure for over 20 post-acute and home health venues of a regional academic health system.
  • Completed a digital marketing strategy and road map for a regional academic healthcare system to enhance omnichannel marketing attribution and the return on investment for sales spending.
  • Developed the program and project management office and comprehensive implementation road map (people, process, technology, risk, finance, etc.) for an international greenfield quaternary care academic teaching hospital affiliated with a major U.S. academic teaching health system.
  • Developed a comprehensive technology enablement strategy for a greenfield national pediatric teaching hospital that resulted from the consolidation of three regional/legacy pediatric teaching hospitals, including ERP, EMR, HIE, mobile, digital and medical equipment.

Also during his career, Larry was founder, chairman and CEO of International Quality Healthcare Professional Connection (IQHPC). He also co-founded the healthcare consultancy Hanrahan Williams LLC. His past roles include senior health executive, management consultant, physician and medical research scientist.

Larry received his Master of Business Administration from The University of Texas at Austin McCombs School of Business, his medical doctorate from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, and his Bachelor of Arts in chemistry from Miami University. He completed a surgical research fellowship in the Division of Surgery at Boston University School of Medicine.

Larry has authored or co-authored over 20 scientific and/or business publications and has presented at over 40 regional, national or international meetings. He was the 1990 winner of the New England Surgical Society's Resident Research Competition, a finalist in the American College of Surgeons 10th F.L. Raffucci Forum and the winner of a 2006 National Innovation Competition for his work with computerized physician order entry (CPOE). He was also a contributing author in Healthcare Technology Vol. 3: Steps Toward Developing an Electronic Health Record, published by Montgomery Research in 2005. Dr. Hanrahan received two patent approvals for a medical device that is used to study and treat vein disease.

Larry is currently on the boards and executive committees of both the Texas Business Hall of Fame Foundation (executive committee) and the Ronald McDonald House Houston (board president 2021-22) and is a consultant to the Council for Medical Education of the Texas Medical Association. Larry is a member of the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society, the American Medical Association, the American College of Healthcare Executives, and the Healthcare Financial Management Association.
