A Guide to Salesforce Trailhead for Higher Education
Helpful Trails for Users in Higher Education
Welcome to Trailhead! Trailhead is the fun way to learn Salesforce. Each course, or "trail" is a guided learning path that charts your progression through Salesforce skills. Many of the trails are tailored towards commercial users. However, here is Huron's guide for trails that are helpful for those in higher education. Let's get started!
Getting Started with Trailhead
Step 1: Start at Trailhead Home - https://trailhead.salesforce.com/en
Step 2: Create a Developer Org if you don't have one already. In the upper-right of this screen, there's a "Sign Up" button, which will walk you through the process of creating a Developer Org.
Step 3: Once you've created a password and logged in, you can continue with the trials outlined below.
Learn CMS Essentials
All admins and developers should start with the "Learn CRM Essentials" trail which will ground the user in the core concepts of Salesforce, customizations and how the Salesforce platform works.
Manage Your Higher Ed Data With HEDA
Both admins and developers will benefit from this trail which provides an introduction to the Higher Education Data Architecture (HEDA). HEDA is a community-sourced tool to help customize Salesforce for the needs of higher education. This trail was designed with the help of key members of the Salesforce.org Higher Education Advisory Council.
Team members who will be admins, running the day-to-day operations of Salesforce as a product, should follow that trail with the "Admin Beginner" trail. This is a lengthy trail (nearly 9 hours), but gives the user the opportunity to learn about data models in Salesforce, configuring core features like Salesforce1 mobile app and Chatter and gives the user a chance to do an introductory course in reports & dashboards.

- Admin intermediate: https://trailhead.salesforce.com/trails/force_com_admin_intermediate
- Admin advanced: https://trailhead.salesforce.com/trails/force_com_admin_advanced
- HEDA basics - For anyone hoping to use HEDA, it is helpful to get this basic introduction: https://trailhead.salesforce.com/en/module/highered_heda_basics
Team members who will be developers, writing more complex code and integrations with the platform, should follow the "Learn CRM Essentials" trail with the "Developer Beginner" trail. There is overlap in some of the trail modules between this and the "Admin Beginner" trail, but it includes more of the automation tools (Process Automation module) and code (Apex Basics and Database module) that a developer will need to be successful.

Another option for any technical resources that know .NET should consider this trail, as it helps explain Apex (trigger language) for that skill set. https://trailhead.salesforce.com/module/apex_basics_dotnet

Project Management: Build A Battle Station
Finally, all project team leads should consider one of the project-based trails. There's a fun "Build a Battle Station App", which will help create a project management tool in Salesforce without code!
Get Started With Lightning Experience
Your team may already be working through this one, but if you want to learn about the Lightning Experience and how to properly set up and maintain the system, then this trail is for you. It covers many of the same Salesforce basics as the Admin Beginner trail does, but focuses on how the changes identified there impact the Lightning UI. The Lightning Chatter Basics and App Customization sections will be key to building a team who can help sustain an implementation post go-live.
Personalize Your Customer Journeys With the Marketing Cloud
If you are interested in Salesforce Marketing Cloud, take a look at the trail devoted to that part of the Salesforce ecosystem. This starts with Marketing Cloud basics, which focus on the various features of the Cloud. You'll then step up to learning about the various studios within Marketing Cloud (email, social, etc.) and finally focus on some detailed best practices for email marketing.
