Mr. James Alt is Managing Director at Huron and leads the US Retail and Consumer Goods sector for its Business Advisory practice. He is a senior retail executive with hands-on experience in executing growth, performance improvement, and restructuring or turnaround strategies at mass, department stores, specialty, e-commerce retailers, and restaurants. He has a strong background in omni-channel, merchandising, global sourcing, inventory management, digital marketing, e-commerce, big data/analytics and business intelligence solutions.
Prior to joining Huron, Jim served as a senior advisor to companies and also assisted private equity and hedge funds in helping them better understand industry trends, retail categories, or retail and consumer goods companies in their investment or due diligence process. He also recently served as Business President for Sears Holdings for both Sears and Kmart stores, and has also worked for other retailers including Target Stores and Kozmo.com. Mr. Alt has served as a restructuring and turnaround advisor for Glass & Associates, as well as a management consultant for Ernst & Young.
Jim thrives on solving complex organizational issues including: real estate, merchandising and inventory productivity, technology, capital investment, marketing, and supply chain opportunities across the P&L including a focus on driving gross margin and reducing SG&A through a customer lens approach. He is also highly experienced and a thought leader with a diverse category background including: mattresses, outdoor living, seasonal, furniture, home, lawn & garden, electronics, sporting goods, toys, grocery, apparel, and food & consumables.
