About Sandy
Among the country's most recognizable college athletics directors, Sandy has over 40 years of experience as an administrator and coach. Formerly the vice president for intercollegiate athletics and athletic director at Penn State University, Sandy also held athletics director roles at the University of California, Berkeley from 2004 to 2014, and at Tulane University from 1996 to 1999, as well as other leadership roles at Notre Dame and Northwestern.
At Penn State, Sandy oversaw one of the nation's most comprehensive athletics programs, supporting approximately 800 student-athletes across 31 sports and guiding the department to seven NCAA Championships and 36 conference titles during her tenure. At Cal, she directed the university to 20 team national championships and six top 10 finishes in the Learfield Directors' Cup standings. Her leadership has consistently driven academic excellence, facility modernization, and record fundraising growth at every institution she has served.
She was named Sports Business Journal's Athletic Director of the Year in 2022, the first woman ever to receive the honor, and was previously a finalist for the award in 2009 and 2018. Additionally, she has served on the NCAA Football Oversight Committee, including as Chair, and has represented the Big Ten Conference on the NCAA Division I Council.
